Tutorial Details

  • Step into a craft with centuries of British heritage. Led by Elaine of Something Corny, this online workshop introduces the traditional skill of straw plaiting and shows how it can be reimagined for modern millinery. You’ll create a contemporary headband adorned with a hand-crafted straw flower — a technique very few milliners ever get the chance to learn.
  • 🗓 Thursday 26th March, 11am
  • Perfect for milliners wanting to broaden their design vocabulary with a rare and beautiful artform.

This is a demonstration-style class—watch, take notes, and ask questions in real-time.

A recording will be provided afterwards so you can rewatch at your own pace and follow along when you’re ready to practice.

About the Instructor

With over four decades dedicated to straw artistry, Elaine is one of the UK’s most respected and accomplished straw artists.

Based in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, her work is deeply rooted in heritage and personal history — inspired by the stories of her grandfather, a farm labourer in the region a century ago. She joined the Guild of Straw Craftsmen in 1989 and achieved her prestigious Craftsman Award in 1999, recognising her exceptional technical excellence.

Elaine is:
• A founding member of the Scottish Straw Workers
• A member of the National Association of Wheat Weavers
• A member of the California Straw Arts Guild (USA)

Her expertise has taken her far beyond heritage craft circles.

She has created bespoke straw pieces for leading fashion houses for runway shows, produced work for theatre and television, collaborated on exhibitions, and worked alongside Kirstie Allsopp — teaching at The Handmade Fair in London and welcoming television cameras into her Scottish workshop.

Her work has been featured in publications including Elle Decoration and Landscape, and she is regularly invited to deliver talks and live demonstrations.
